Is Microsoft 365 Business Premium Worth the Extra Cost?

For most Australian businesses with more than five staff, yes - Business Premium is worth the A$15.10 per user per month premium over Business Standard. The upgrade adds Intune for device management, Conditional Access for access control, Defender for Business for endpoint protection, and Defender for Office 365 for email security. These are not nice-to-haves for a business with remote workers, personal devices in use, or any client data worth protecting. The scenarios where Business Standard is genuinely sufficient are narrower than most business owners assume.

What you are actually paying the extra A$15.10 for

The upgrade from Business Standard to Business Premium adds the Microsoft security stack for SMBs. Everything else - email, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, desktop Office apps - is identical between the two plans. You are paying for four things:

  1. 01

    Microsoft Intune

Device management for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. Intune lets you enforce that only compliant, managed devices can access company email and files. You can remotely wipe company data from a lost or stolen device without affecting the user's personal content. You can push security policies, certificates, and configurations to every device in your fleet. Purchased standalone, Intune costs approximately A$12 per device per month. In Business Premium, it is included.

  2. 02

Microsoft Entra ID P1 (formerly Azure AD P1)

Conditional Access - the ability to create access policies based on user identity, device compliance, location, and risk signals. With Entra ID P1, you can enforce that access to company data requires a managed device, or block access from locations outside Australia, or require step-up authentication when an unusual login pattern is detected. This is the control that cyber insurers and enterprise clients increasingly ask for evidence of.

  3. 03

    Microsoft Defender for Business

Endpoint detection and response (EDR) for up to 300 devices. Defender for Business provides real-time protection, behavioural analysis, and a managed threat response capability that goes well beyond the basic antivirus included with Windows. It surfaces threats across your device fleet and guides remediation. Standalone EDR solutions of equivalent capability cost A$8 to A$25 per device per month.

  4. 04

Azure Information Protection P1 and Microsoft Purview

Sensitivity labels for classifying documents and emails, and the policies to enforce those classifications. This is the foundation for data governance and for governing what Microsoft Copilot can surface from your environment.

The standalone cost comparison

If you were to purchase the Business Premium security additions separately on top of Business Standard:

Business Premium security features if purchased separately

FeatureStandalone cost (approx, per user/month)
Microsoft IntuneA$12.00
Entra ID P1A$10.00
Microsoft Defender for BusinessA$5.00
Azure Information Protection P1A$3.50
TotalA$30.50
Premium upgrade costA$15.10

The bundled upgrade from Standard to Premium costs approximately half what the equivalent security tools would cost purchased separately. At A$15.10 per user per month, Business Premium is not a premium-priced plan - it is one of the better-value security bundles available to Australian SMBs.

When Business Premium is clearly worth it

  • Your staff work remotely or use personal devices to access company email and files - Intune and Conditional Access are the controls that make this safe
  • You handle sensitive client data - financial records, health information, legal matters, personal data - where a breach would have regulatory or reputational consequences
  • You have received a cyber insurance renewal questionnaire asking about device management, MFA policies, or endpoint protection
  • A client or partner has asked for evidence of your security controls as part of a vendor assessment
  • You are planning to deploy Microsoft 365 Copilot - Business Premium is the minimum eligible plan
  • You have more than ten staff and plan to grow - the cost to clean up a Standard-era environment after growing through it is higher than upgrading early

When Standard might still be appropriate

Business Standard is appropriate for very small businesses - typically under five people - where all work happens on company-owned, well-controlled devices, there is no sensitive data in the environment, and compliance requirements are minimal. For these businesses, the security features of Premium exist but are disproportionate to the risk.

The honest answer is that most Australian businesses with more than a handful of staff, any remote working, or any meaningful volume of sensitive data in Microsoft 365 have outgrown Standard and should be on Premium.

The most expensive time to upgrade to Business Premium is after a security incident. Device management, endpoint protection, and Conditional Access become significantly harder to implement in a reactive context when they are urgently needed rather than planned. The A$15.10 per user per month paid proactively is considerably cheaper than the incident response, remediation, and client notification costs it prevents.

The Copilot angle

Business Premium is the gateway to Microsoft 365 Copilot. If your business is considering Copilot in the next 12 to 24 months - and given Microsoft's current trajectory and Australian adoption rates, most businesses should be - then upgrading to Business Premium now is the correct preparatory move. You gain the security features immediately and position yourself for Copilot deployment when you are ready.
